Do I need a referral for pelvic health physiotherapy?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us!
I’m not comfortable with having an internal examination during the appointment, can the physiotherapist still help me?
While internal examinations can give the therapist a little better understanding during the assessment, your therapist will always respect your decision and will work with you on external treatment only. This will not impact the quality of care which can be provided as there is still much that can be done with external examinations and treatments!
Can physiotherapy help with postpartum recovery?
Yes. Pelvic health physiotherapy can help rebuild pelvic floor strength, core stability, return to activities that you love, and improve overall comfort after childbirth.
How soon after childbirth can I attend pelvic floor physiotherapy?
You can be seen as soon as a few days after childbirth as long as you are comfortable attending, this is safe following both vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
Early postpartum visits (often within the first 1-3 weeks) focus on gentle movements, breathwork, postural corrections, healing support and answering questions about recovery.
More active rehabilitation such as strengthening, core work, and higher-level exercise typically progresses over the following weeks as your body heals. However, pelvic floor physiotherapy is always adjusted to your stage of recovery, symptoms, and goals.
If you’re experiencing concerns like leaking, heaviness, pain, or difficulty returning to activity, it’s appropriate to be seen at any stage postpartum. It is recommended that you wait at least 6 weeks post-partum or until cleared by a physician to have an internal assessment.
Can I bring my child to the appointment?
Absolutely! We understand that finding childcare can be a barrier to attending appointments, so please bring your little ones!
Can I attend when I am on my period?
Yes. This will not affect assessment or treatment of the pelvic floor muscles.
Is pelvic health physiotherapy painful?
Assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor should not be painful, however you may experience some discomfort with palpation of tender areas.
Will I need to avoid activity?
No. We focus on safe, individualized approaches to allow movement while reducing discomfort or injury risk.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your symptoms, goals, and response to treatment. Plans are tailored and evolve as you progress.
